Thus far, I have been blessed with children who aren't all that attached to a baby soother - a lovey, a blankie, a pacifier, a thumb, etc. For both Benjamin and Timothy, we took away the pacifier between 8-9 months of age, and it was quite painless for all of us. Luckily, they never developed another crutch!
With this said, since Benjamin was about 15 months old, he has slept with a lamb/blanket (the lamb has a blanket for it's body). What he loved most about the lamb was the tag, or the "flag", as he likes to call it. Every night, he would find the "flag" on his lamb and rub it between his fingers while going to sleep. Since it was so small, we've always taken it with us every where we go, even though he has never had trouble going to sleep without it, and he never asked for it away from home. The lamb has just always been there, and in fact, I think I was more attached than he was!
Well, all of a sudden last week, when we were putting him to bed each night, he started telling us, "No! I don't want my lamb!" Then, he threw it to the foot of his bed. After doing this repeatedly for about 4 consecutive nights, we just gave in and haven't mentioned it at all. Neither has he.
So....I guess Benjamin has reached a milestone of giving up his "lovey." This makes me happy and proud in many ways, and it makes me sad in others. My baby is growing up - and way too fast!
Next, he'll be asking me to drop him off at school instead of walking him in!!!! Okay, maybe I am getting ahead of myself (ha), but bottom line - these are the little things...that make up the big things.....that all of a sudden turns our little babies into boys...and boys into men, and I just want to make sure that I stop and take notice.
So.........I guess it's time to wash the lovey one last time.....and put it away safely to be taken out in 25+ years when my baby has a baby of his own. Good night, lovey. Good night.
